« Radio detection of cosmic rays: towards resolving the mass composition »

Anne Zilles

In the last decade the measurement of the emitted radio signal from air showers got an established technique for detecting cosmic rays. Nowadays we understand the physics of the radio emission in extensive air showers in very detail so that we can predict the radio emission from an air shower using particle-level simulations. Besides a short introduction to the physics of the radio signal from air showers, I will introduce a laboratory experiment for testing the simulations and show how simulations can be used to measure the mass composition of cosmic rays with high-resolution in the energy region around 1017eV where the transition from a galactic to an extragalactic origin could occur.
